"Dear Parishioners, I would like to take this opportunity at
Christmas to thank you for your warm welcome to me, as Parish Priest, into
your parish. During the past year I have been enormously impressed by the
dedication and service to the parish family by so many. The level of
involvement makes this parish one of the most advanced in the diocese in
terms of lay responsibility; for that you are to be commended. During the
coming year, we will try and build on this by promoting a strong Catholic
education for adults in order to build a strong foundation to the work being
done. Together as priest and parishioners, we will try to grow in our
understanding of the teaching of the Church and deepen our relationship with
Jesus the Christ.
I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and every blessing for the New Year.

Bishop Treanor has received
recommendations arising out of the Listening Day events held before the
Summer in all parishes throughout the Diocese.
The recommendations now form part of a Report which will be officially
launched by the Bishop on the feast of St Malachy, 3 November 2011.
It was made available on the Diocesan website on that date and was
presented to parishes throughout the Diocese at weekend Masses on 5/6 and

THE CHURCH TACKLING SECTARIANISM
(Posted
December 2011)
Following last year’s excellent
course on Understanding Sectarianism, Dr.Johnston McMaster and Dr Cathy
Higgins will be leading us in a 6 week
course on the theme:
'Revisioning God:
Doing Anti-Sectarian Theology'
Six Session Course
on WEDNESDAYS
Wed 11th January 2012: Reading the Bible
against Sectarianism.
Wed 18th January 2012: Requiem for a Violent God.
Wed 25th January 2012: “Many are called, few are chosen” how odd of God to choose!
Wed 1st Feb 2012: Saved and satisfied!
Wed 8th Feb 2012: Sacrament of Exclusion or Sacrament of Peace.
Wed 15th Feb 2012: God Beyond our Certainties: Unknowing God for the 21st Century.
At the heart of sectarian
theology is a God-image, which has become warped and distorted. It is a
violent God-image, which has more to do with the projection of our fear of
the other and our fear-driven and violent responses to the other. One does
not have to kill to be violent to the other or to make God in our violent,
exclusive image. The bible itself has often been a sectarian weapon,
highlighting the need to re-read the Bible against sectarianism. How we
interpret can be a battlefield! Theologies of salvation and sacraments
become exclusion orders, ensuring that the other remains 'other and
outside'. These are well-intentioned theologies, which turn out to be far
from innocent, with negative and destructive relational consequences.
Perhaps we all need to be less sure! The course will attempt to do
anti-sectarian theology.

WHITE RIBBON SUNDAY-
27th November 2011
(Posted
November 2011)
Women’s Aid locally
have asked Churches to be aware of White Ribbon Sunday, to raise awareness
of the worldwide problem of violence against women.
The White Ribbon Campaign is an
international campaign, which originated in Canada in 1991 by a group of men
in condemnation of violence against women, wherever that violence takes
place. Wearing a White Ribbon is a statement the wearer vows:
‘Never to commit, condone or
stay silent about violence against women’.
Atrocities against women and
girls are committed every day in every country. At least one out of every
three women has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her
lifetime, according to a study based on 50 surveys from around the world. In
the UK, on average, two women per week are killed by a male partner or
former partner. Nearly half of all female murder victims are killed by a
partner or ex-partner. In Northern Ireland, PSNI respond to an incident of
domestic violence every 22 minutes of every day; 11 babies were born to
mothers living in refuges across Northern Ireland last year.
In our local area alone, Women’s Aid supports an average of over 1,200
women every year. Locally too, we have seen the tragedy when women, mothers,
are murdered by partners, and the devastation that leaves behind for
families.
Domestic violence is not
confined to a small section of our community. Victims, and perpetrators come
from all walks of life, and no religious denomination is exempt.
Many victims of domestic
violence sit in pews every Sunday. It is to those victims of domestic
violence that the organisers want to reach out. Consider wearing a White
Ribbon on White Ribbon Sunday, and to remember that commitment made ‘Never
to commit, condone or stay silent about violence against women’. If
you wish to make a donation, the donation will go towards supporting women
and children living with domestic violence in this area, in the run up to
Christmas, which is a particularly difficult time for many.
The
organisers would also like
to ask you the question: "What can you do as a congregation to support
the White Ribbon campaign and what can you do as an individual?"
They believe that everyone can – and should - do something.
Thank you for hearing this
message. |

'DAUGHTERS OF
JESUS' LEAVING GREENISLAND
(Posted
March 2011)
It is with sadness that we learn that the sisters are leaving Greenisland,
having served in the parish since 1968. The sisters belong to a
French congregation called "The Daughters of Jesus" and engaged in a
very wide apostolate in responding to the diverse needs of the parish.
These involved education of the young, visitation to hospitals and
homes, preparing adults for reception into the church and preparing some
children for the reception of the Sacraments. The Sisters also provided
accommodation for students irrespective of creed, at the fast growing
Polytechnic (later to become the University of Ulster) from 1971 until
1988. The Daughters of Jesus had a very close and active role with the
Association for Mental Health known as Beacon House in Carrickfergus.
This covered a span of sixteen years. Besides these external
involvements the sisters have provided a fount of spiritual strength and
support for the parish in a humble and quiet way. They will be
sadly missed. We wish them well for the future and thank them for
their years of dedication and service and for the fond memories they
leave those of us who knew and served with them.
Open Letter from the
Sisters
"No words are adequate to express our thanks to you all for such a
wonderful Thanksgiving Mass and Party last Sunday. The beautiful gifts
you gave us will be treasured. For us, they are also a token of all we
received from you over the years: the strength of support and
encouragement, the examples of faith and endurance; the knowledge that
we are loved and appreciated — in a word, the gift of friendship, which
goes beyond the boundaries of time and space, and unites us wherever we
are. Thank you!"
Sisters break the news
"The Daughters of Jesus have been in
Greenisland for 43 years. Throughout these years we have shared a close
association with you in the local area. We feel now that our mission
here is complete and it is time to move on.
So it is in dialogue and
consultation with our superiors that each one of us has been asked to
join other communities in England by the end of the summer. The reasons
fore this decision are: the diminishing number of Sisters, the need for
greater proximity as we get older, and the wisdom of moving while we
still have enough energy to adapt to new situations/circumstances.
Our years have covered a
rich period of receiving and giving and we will carry treasured memories
of our time with you. To express our deep gratitude to all our friends,
parishioners and clergy, a Mass of Thanksgiving will be offered during
the Easter season, for you all and your families."

UNEARTHING THE
THEOLOGICAL ROOTS OF SECTARIANISM

Course Description
The idea of good relations has been seductive or sleep inducing. We have
found it easier to transfer attention to the relationship with ethnic
minorities. The emerging problem of racism is serious and requires action.
But the elephant in the room remains sectarianism and despite a real desire
in the community to move forward into a more positive future, this remains a
problem that holds us back. It is a problem that cannot be wished away and
which requires our ongoing attention.
It is clear that there is a political and religious inability to deal with
sectarianism. When the subject is addressed it is often in political and
economic terms, and this is necessary. However, at the heart of
sectarianism, is a deeper and even more serious issue - theology. Any
accepted definition of sectarianism has religion as a foundational component
and it is therefore a fundamental part of the problem. Despite this, too
often the subject is explored without any significant attention being paid
to its theological roots. To ignore these roots is to ignore the cultural
power of theology which has shaped a community. This remains true, even
though many in society have little or no connection to church life. One does
not need a faith commitment to engage with sectarian theology or to practice
it.
If theology is a fundamental element in the makeup of sectarianism, then
people of faith need to move to a place beyond denial, complacency or a
sense of powerlessness. The struggle is an ongoing one, but it is not
hopeless. It is an issue that needs to be faced squarely and the church has
an important role to play. By sharing responsibility for the problem; by
gaining a better understanding and recognising it in all its subtly,
sectarianism can be unseated from its too often unchallenged place in
society and robbed of its power.
To this end, the course will explore in depth the respective Catholic and
Protestant theologies which have had divisive and disastrous relational and
political consequences - and it is consequences, not intentions that make
theologies sectarian. The course will also explore useful faith expressions
and local strategies for overcoming sectarianism.

PRESENTATION AND CEILI FOR Fr SEAN DILLON

Time:after 7pm Mass
Venue: in Parish Community Centre, Carrickfergus
Fr DILLON MOVING TO
GLENAVY AND KILLEAD
PARISH
THE PARISH WELCOMES FR TONY CURRAN AS NEW P.P.
(Posted August 2010)
It is with sadness that we say goodbye to Fr Sean Dillon who takes up his new post as Parish Priest
of Glenavy and Killead. We wish him every blessing in his new parish. We thank him for all his hard work, support and friendship over the past
five years in Carrickfergus. His time with us will be remembered as a time of
ongoing empowerment and encouragement of the laity, not just to be
involved, but to be the church in action. With his leadership too,
the Sunday Eucharist has become a time of true celebration with people
coming away with their hope and faith renewed and their spirits
uplifted.
The community now welcomes an old friend back to the parish, Fr Tony
Curran, who served as curate in Greenisland in the 90's and who is
moving from St Malachy's parish in the Markets area of Belfast.

HARVEST SUNDAY - 16/17th OCTOBER 2010
(Posted October 2010)

Harvest Sunday 2010
See Photographs from 2009
See Photographs from 2008
See Photographs from
2007
The Harvest Festival used to be celebrated at the beginning of the
Harvest season in August and was called Lammas, meaning 'loaf Mass'.
Farmers made loaves of bread from the new wheat crop and gave them to
their local church. They were then used as the Communion bread during a
special mass thanking God for the Harvest. The custom died out in the
Catholic tradition at the time of the Reformation. Nowadays churches
have harvest festivals at the end of the Harvest season. A few years ago
the parish revived the celebration of Harvest at Sunday Mass, making it
a special time to focus on God's wonderful provision and mindful that
really there is nothing that we can give God that He has not already
given us.
This year again parishioners in St Nicholas' were asked to donate items
to make up the displays. These were then donated to the Belfast 'Welcome
Organisation' on the Lower Falls Road, which offers unconditional
support to people who are vulnerable. |

'THE
CARRICKFERGUS FRIARY
The Franciscan Heritage of Carrickfergus'
(Posted October 2010)
A one day conference - 16th October
2010

Keynote Speakers:
Bro David Jardine and Fr Philip Deane (native of Carrickfergus Parish)
together at the Conference.
Other speakers included, Ruairi O’Baoill, Freda Keyes, Dr John Barry, Philip
Crawford and
conference coordinator Philip Orr.
In 1232AD, just
six years after the death of St Francis of Assisi, a Franciscan Friary was
founded in Carrickfergus. During the next three hundred years that friary
played a key role in the life of the town.
The conference explored this important, if
some what overlooked, aspect of the borough’s rich cultural heritage and was
attended by around 120 people. The Town Hall venue for the conference
was significant, as it is the site of the
former friary, of which sadly nothing remains.
Those attending learnt
from an archaeologist about the friary itself and the medieval town of which it
was a part. This will included a short walking tour. They also learnt about the
various events which happened in Carrickfergus during the friary's
existence, including King John's stay at the castle and the arrival of the
Black Death.
They also
heard
about the life of St Francis, and about the Franciscan Order within the
Anglican and Catholic traditions and asked if the Franciscan ethos has
a relevance for today's world, particularly in relation to environmental
protection and inter-faith dialogue.
The day will concluded with a short meditation.

HARVEST SUNDAY - 25th OCTOBER 2009
(Posted October 2008)

The Harvest Festival used to be celebrated at the beginning of the Harvest season in August and was called Lammas, meaning 'loaf Mass'. Farmers made loaves of bread from the new wheat crop and gave them to their local church. They were then used as the Communion bread during a special mass thanking God
for the Harvest. The custom died out in the Catholic tradition at the time of the Reformation. Nowadays churches have harvest festivals at the end of the Harvest season.
A few years ago the parish revived the celebration of Harvest at Sunday Mass, making it a special time to focus on God's wonderful provision and mindful that really there is nothing that we can give God that He has not already given us.
This year again parishioners in St Nicholas' were asked to donate items to
make up the displays.
These were then donated to the Belfast 'Welcome Organisation' on the Lower
Falls Road, which offers unconditional support to people who are vulnerable.

ISE EDUCATION FOR
RECONCILIATION PROGRAMME Autumn 2009 "Christianity and Islam - Towards a
Better Understanding"
(Posted September 2009)
A six weeks course exploring the
essentials of two Abrahamic faiths, Christianity and Islam.
This course is a small attempt to replace the
threatened clash of civilisations with the dialogue of civilisations. In a
world of violence Christians and Muslims are pushed into opposite camps,
with each perceived as extreme. Each of our faiths risks being hijacked by
extremists. It is in this context that understanding, respect and positive
tolerance become important. Also important is learning to practice in
relationship, the compassion and justice at the heart of our faith
traditions, which is rooted in our experiences of God.
WHEN? MONDAY evenings at 7-30pm,
WHERE? ISE, 683 Antrim Road Belfast,
BT15 4EG
COST? There is no Fee.
WHO CAN ATTEND? Open to anyone
interested in subject matter and in improving understanding between
different faiths.
The course will therefore explore the key
convictions of Christianity and Islam; those things which shape our deepest
beliefs, ethics and practice. All sessions will provide opportunity for
Christians and Muslims to enter into respectful conversation with openness
and readiness to learn from each other.
DATES:
Monday 28 September,
Monday 5 October

PARISH TO HOST 'DAY OF PRIVATE REFLECTION ON
THE CONFLICT IN NORTHERN IRELAND'
Sunday 21st JUNE 2009
(Posted May 2009)
The event will take
the form of a 15 minute audio-visual presentation running on a continual
basis and members of the public are invited to avail of it on a drop-in
basis.
COME, SEE, REFLECT!
There will be no talks given.
There will be no group activities.
Two local churches have
kindly agreed to host the event:-
Members of
the public will be able to drop into the
Gateway Church at Governors Place.
2-30pm
until 4-30pm
and
the presentation will be
repeated in
St Nicholas’ Catholic Church, Minorca Place
7pm until 8-30pm

A Day of Private Reflection on
‘The Troubles’
The Carrickfergus Borough Church Forum have responded to the
invitation to provide space for private reflection on the conflict in and
about Northern Ireland, euphemistically referred to as ‘the Troubles’.
This now annual event, will take place on Sunday 21st June 2009.
The 'Day of Private Reflection' is being set aside to acknowledge the deep
hurt and pain caused by the conflict, and to allow time for reflection on
personal attitudes, by asking “what more might I have done or might still
do, to make sure that such loss should never be allowed to happen again?”
The Day of Private Reflection is an initiative of ‘Healing Through
Remembering’, an extensive cross-community body, set up over the last six
years to focus on the issue of dealing constructively with the past.
It is totally independent of government, political parties, the churches,
and other groups.
In line with the principles of the Healing through Remembering Project, the
presentation will aim to be respectful of differing views, political
aspirations and perspectives on the conflict and to encourage a positive and
respectful way of reflecting on the past that will be healing for the
future.
June 21st, the summer solstice; the longest day of the year, has
historically been regarded as representing a pause in the cycle of nature,
marking as it does, the change in the balance of relationship between the
hours of dark and light. As such it has been recognised as a most
suitable time to reflect on the sensitive balance between the pain of the
past and the hope for the future in our society.
Comments from 'Day of Private Reflection 2008'
“Very good exhibition. We look back in order to move forward in hope”.
“Very interesting. Lest we forget”.
“This is a very positive and rather wonderful approach to events that must
otherwise prove almost too hard to bear by people who have suffered so
terribly in the past”.
“It must never happen again. If it breaks human hearts what must God
think about it all. Our peace cost Him so, so much. Excellent
presentation”.
“A vary moving presentation that causes one to reflect on not only the
conflict depicted, but on all other conflicts ongoing throughout the world
and the need for humankind
to change”.
“A good balanced presentation of what happened. Let us never forget
but move forward together and enjoy our shared future. Everyone
suffered.

'NOT IN OUR NAME'
(Posted
March 2009)
At a press conference on Thursday 12 March 2009,
the leaders of the Church of Ireland, Roman Catholic, Methodist and
Presbyterian Churches, together with the Irish Council of Churches and
Evangelical Alliance, asked churches this weekend to offer special prayers
for 'our land and our people' and encouraged people to wear a purple ribbon
as sign of commitment to working together for good.
CHURCH LEADERS
PASTORAL LETTER: 'TOGETHER FOR GOOD'
"We have all been shocked and hurt by the tragic events of the
last few days, with the murders of two young soldiers and a policeman -
Sapper Mark Quinsey and Sapper Patrick Azimkar, at Massereene and Constable
Stephen Carroll in Craigavon. Across the community people have been united
in anger, sympathy and revulsion, but underlying the raw emotions has been a
firm determination not to go back to what we all thought had been left
behind. We offer our sincere sympathy to the families, friends and
colleagues of those who have been killed. We also assure those who have been
injured of our prayers and continuing concern .............................

CHRISTIANITY IN DIALOGUE - KEY CHALLENGES
FOR OUR TIME
Irish School of Ecumenics (nine session course)
Education for Reconciliation
Programme
(Posted
September 2008)
All faiths, including the Christian faith,
will have to live in the 21st century in relation to each other. A major
challenge of our time is one in which neighbour religions will live
faith and attempt to talk about God, the incomprehensible mystery.
Dialogue will be part of life as the world continues to shrink and all
become neighbours. Such dialogue presents us with key challenges, big
questions that need to be faced. We may learn to speak of God in
different and deeper ways and find our faith experience enriched. In the
encounter between neighbour religions, secular humanism and the new
atheism, there is much to be gained by all.
This course will explore some of the key challenges of our time, share
the Muslim perspectives on Jesus and prayer and rediscover some
surprising and neglected Christian insights.
The course is open to anyone interested
in the subject matter and in improving understanding between the
churches and within the local community.
Tuesdays from 30th September 2008 –
2nd December 2008

COMMEMMORATING THE PAST -
REMEMBERING THE FUTURE:
Responding to a Culture of Commemoration
(Posted January 2008)
A series of six
Thursday evening talks
in:
Carrickfergus
Town Hall, (Dobbs Room)
commencing:
Thursday 10th
January 2008
at
7-30pm

Every country
has a culture of commemoration. This may be more obvious in Ireland
than many other places, were the different groups in our history of
conflict each have their chosen traumas and chosen glories to remember.
With the new
and more hopeful phase in our
peace process, enhancing confidence and creating the feeling that we are
on the way to being at peace with ourselves, will the nature of
commemoration change? Within a decade we will commemorate some of the
most significant events in modem Irish history and which have affected
all of us in different ways. How will we remember in the future? Will
the new atmosphere open up a more critical awareness, deconstruct myths,
enable us to pick out positive aspects which we might even share and
appreciate together?
These are some
of the questions that will be asked as we explore six significant events
from our past which will be commemorated in a context different from
anything before now.

Joe and Mary Murphy had been married for
20 years but at least 10 of those had been what Joe describes as "a silent
hell". They were full of resentment towards each other, Joe because he felt
Mary didn't understand his deep unhappiness, Mary because she felt she had
to be strong and hold everything together while Joe moped. "If we did
try to talk, our voices would instantly go up a couple of octaves and in two
seconds we'd be heading for a row," says Mary. "Everything was empty and
joyless. We had built a wall between us." .................

CARRICKFERGUS JOURNEY IN UNDERSTANDING
(Posted
October 2007)
AUTUMN 2007
You are probably well aware by
now that 2007 marks the 400th anniversary of what has become know
as the ‘Flight of the Earls’, which is seen by many to mark the
end of Gaelic Ireland as a distinct political system. Many events have
been held across the country particularly west of the Bann to
commemorate this event. Carrickfergus, has a strong but largely
overlooked historical connection with the Flight of the Earls through
the person of Sir Arthur Chichester, one time Governor of Carrickfergus
and Lord Deputy of Ireland
[Read more].
[Click
here for Poster]
Not to be left
out, the Carrickfergus Journey in Understanding Group invited
Dr John McCavitt,
author, historian, and leading authority on both the Flight of the Earls
and the life of Sir Arthur Chichester, to Carrickfergus, to give a
presentation entitled:-
'A clash of
Cultures - Sir Arthur Chichester and the Flight of the Earls 1607’
The venue was:
Carrickfergus Town
Hall
on
Thursday 29th
November 2007
at
8pm.
Dr McCavitt
has been much in demand in this anniversary year and has acted as an
historical adviser on the Flight of the Earls to both the BBC and the
Ulster Scots Agency. Using images from his most recently published book,
‘The Flight of the Earls an Illustrated History’, he gave a fully
illustrated presentation. Carrickfergus Town Hall is a particularly
appropriate venue, standing as it does, practically on the site of
Joymount Palace, Chichester’s Jacobean Mansion which in turn was built
on the site of a former Franciscan friary. Unfortunately the mansion no
longer exists today.

CCCI CONFERENCE - 'DIVIDED PAST, SHARED FUTURE'
Saturday 3rd November 2007
(Posted September 2007)
What is
the church's role in addressing the legacy of the Troubles? How
can Christian faith enable and equip us to bring healing to the
wounds of history? There are elements in our own story that we need
to confront Do we have the courage to be open about our own
entanglements with the conflict and the nature of our commitment to
making peace and doing justice.
A truly shared future requires an honest conversation about the
nature of our diverse society and how we learn to live with our
deepest differences. We cannot have honest conversations about the
future without talking about the legacy of our divided past. How
else can we ensure the past is not repeated?

ST NICHOLAS' GOES HI TECH
(Posted
June 2007)
An excellent new resource in the form of a new
large screen and data projector has been installed in St Nicholas'.
This will bring help bring the Sunday Mass and other liturgical events
into the 21st Century by enhancing the congregation's participation in
the worship. It will also provide the priest with a valuable tool
for proclaiming the gospel message in a way very much in keeping with
our modern age of communication.

ECO-CONGREGATION-IRELAND
(Posted October 2007)

Eco-Congregation aims to encourage churches to celebrate the gift of God's
creation, to recognize the interdependence of all creation, and to care for
it in their life and mission and through the members' personal lifestyles.
Eco-Congregation Ireland has been
developed in co-operation with four churches – the Church of Ireland, the
Methodist Church in Ireland, the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and the
Roman Catholic Church – whose ecological representatives are in touch with
the many groups operating in Britain and Europe. The programme is available
to all parishes with a keen interest in environmental issues and offers
resources and support to help them to take practical action in the context
of their Christian faith.
See
http://ecocongregationireland.org/
A simple environmental audit is
provided to help congregations assess what they are already
doing and to determine future priorities. They are then
encouraged to download the appropriate resource modules which
aim to integrate environmental care into different areas of
church life. Each church will normally choose three modules on
which to concentrate for the year from a list including: Worship
and Teaching, Children’s and Youth Work, Property and Grounds
Management, Finance – Purchasing and Waste, Personal Lifestyles,
Working with the Local Community and Thinking Globally.
Register your interest with us and
we will send you a starter pack, which includes a special
Eco-Congregation Ireland folder and Module One – an
environmental audit. Once you have completed this audit, you
are on your way to becoming an eco congregation!

CARRICKFERGUS JOURNEY IN UNDERSTANDING 2007.
(First Posted January 2007)
What is still to come? ..................
Part 6
This is the last part of this year's programme before the summer break!
A UNITED LITURGY OF PRAYER
Tues.5th June, 8.00pm
Gateway Church, Governors Place
A united liturgy and prayer for community healing (with our local clergy)
This year's journey so far ..................
This year the theme is 'Walking through Carrick's History - Healing Past Community Hurts'. The plan is to have only one meeting per month between January and June 2007. There are two parts, the Historical journey and the Healing journey.
The Historical Journey started in the Dobbs Room of Carrickfergus Town Hall on Tuesday 23rd January 2007.
Around 80 people attended each of the first two events. The speaker
was the historian Jonathan Bardon, creator of ‘A short History of Ulster in
240 episodes’ which ran weekly on BBC Radio Ulster. On the first
evening held in January, Jonathan spoke on the history of Carrickfergus in
its wider Irish Context. Then in February he concentrated on the more
local aspects of Carrick’s history.
CHURCHES HISTORY TOUR
- Saturday 24 March
The third event in the journey, was an historical walk around
some of Carrick’s town centre churches. It included visits to St Nicholas’ Church of Ireland,
First Presbyterian Church North Street, St Nicholas’ R.C. Church in

| A CARBON-NEUTRAL CHURCH ?
(Posted September 2006)
We really have messed it up, haven't we? We thought our technological revolutions spelled progress. But in ten years' time, because of our 'progress', this fragile and CO2-laden planet will have reached an environmental 'tipping point' with global warming soaring to new heights, as rising sea levels produce millions of refugees and damaged habitats
result in extinction of hundreds of animal species. Who now can challenge the Christian diagnosis of sin as that primal blight of pride and blindness, which results in self-harm for humanity, the end of Eden and the groaning of all creation? So, as Christians, what are we to do? Read on ..........

Mixed Marriages in N. Ireland - Threat or Opportunity?
Christian/Muslim marriage support group
'The decision [to enter an interchurch marriage] can lead to the formation of a practical laboratory of unity. For this to happen there is need for mutual goodwill, understanding and maturity of faith in both partners, and also in the communities from which they come. ... My wish is that in this delicate area reciprocal trust and cooperation between the
churches may grow, fully respecting the rights and responsibilities of the spouses for the faith formation of their own family and the education of their children.'
(Pope Benedict XVI, Warsaw, 2006)
The above quote highlights the ecumenical potential of Christians marrying across the denominational divide. In his address Pope Benedict reaffirms the rights and responsibilities of each spouse and the corresponding responsibilities of the churches to respect the unity of the marriage. There was also papal encouragement for joint pastoral care of the
couple. This teaching reinforces the earlier comments by Pope John-Paul II in Un Unum Sint in 1995 and the input in 1995 to the Pontifical Council by the Interchurch Families Network of which NIMMA is an active member.

CARRICK FAMILIES TOGETHER IN DONEGAL
(Posted June 2006)
A group of families from St Nicholas' Reunited* have spent a weekend in a Donegal hotel examining aspects of their cultural identity. The families, which comprised a total of 35 adults and 20 children and young people, were participating in a residential as part of the ‘Families Together’ project funded by the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation.
Over a number of facilitated sessions the participants examined the impact of the Troubles on the minority Catholic community in Carrickfergus, and explored aspects of the community’s identity today and in the future. Part of the weekend involved contributing symbols and mementoes of the participants’ experience of growing up in Carrickfergus. The items are
to be made in to a collage. Among the objects contributed were candles and a milk churn, symbolising the Ulster Workers Strike of 1974; sympathy cards which had been sent to intimidate a family; a piece of turf from the old St Nicholas’ High School grounds; the lyrics of the song Carrickfergus; and, a football boot, which symbolised an attack on a football team. A 45 record from
the 1960s symbolising Carrickfergus in the post-Troubles era was also contributed to the collage.
A spokesperson for St Nicholas’ Reunited said: “It was very important for us to examine the impact of the Troubles on our community and what this means for our identity today. Leaving Carrickfergus for a weekend to reflect allowed us to gain a bit of distance and perspective on our home town. The collage idea was particularly helpful in focusing on aspects of
what at times has been a painful past. However, we do not want to dwell too much on yesterday, rather, we want to strengthen and build our community for today and tomorrow. The residential also helped us explore how we could do that.”
The Families Together project was funded earlier this year via Carrickfergus Local Strategy Partnership. The project is designed to enhance the social and cultural opportunities for the minority community in the borough. It began with a cultural celebration on St Patrick’s Day. In its next phase the project will explore the minority community’s history in
Carrickfergus which will take place on Saturday 2nd September 2006.
(* St Nicholas’ Reunited formed in 2003 after a reunion between former pupils of St Nicholas’ High School, which opened in 1969 and closed in 1989. The Tesco store now stands on the former site of the school.) |

A ‘Session’ is an informal gathering of musicians playing tunes from a living tradition of Irish and Scottish dance music; reels, jigs, hornpipes etc., that can date back 300 years or more. The instruments might include fiddles, flutes, accordions, pipes, harps, tin whistles, mandolins, banjos, bodhráns, guitars, etc. Songs can be heard. And you never know... dances might even break out from time to time. "A good Session can leave you walking on air, send you home happy and keep your mind filled with music for a whole week." (Charlie Lennon).

PEACE ACTIVIST MICHAEL McGOLDRICK R.I.P.
(Posted April 2006)
Michael McGoldrick, who became a peace activist in Northern Ireland after extremists killed his son in 1996, died while on a Christian aid mission to Moldova, his parish priest said Tuesday. Michael was 64.
The Rev. Martin McAlinden, the McGoldricks' parish priest in Moyraverty, Northern Ireland, said he suffered an apparent heart attack or stroke while delivering supplies in Moldova for the Christian charity he helped found. Michael travelled every few months to Eastern Europe, particularly Moldova and Romania, after raising enough money and supplies. The date of his death wasn't
immediately available.
Michael was the guest speaker at the Parish Cells joint meeting held in March 2005 in Whitehead Parish Hall. At that meeting
Michael, who was accompanied by his wife Bridie, recounted their remarkable spiritual journey which began with the terrible murder of their only son in Lurgan in 1996, through to their present day work on behalf of the people of Moldova, Europe's poorest nation.
"I was a Christian before, but not a fully fledged one," he said in a 2002 interview. "After Michael's death, I had a conversion. Before they put the lid on my son's coffin, I put my two hands on top of his and said: 'Goodbye, I'll see you in Heaven.' From that moment my whole life changed. I realized then how much evil there was in Northern Ireland, and I wanted to turn my life into
something good, something positive."
A life well lived. Rest in Peace.

'COMMUNITIES OF RECONCILIATION'
CARRICKFERGUS JOURNEY IN UNDERSTANDING 2006
(Posted December 2004)
Carrickfergus will be one of 14 centres across Northern Ireland and border counties to host an important inter-church, cross-community course entitled “Communities of Reconciliation”, which aims to highlight reconciliation as an important issue for the local church.
DON'T MISS this exciting new Journey in Understanding course which will be held for 6 Tuesday evenings at 7-30pm in the
Coast Road Hotel, Carrickfergus
, starting on
Tuesday 2nd March through to Tuesday 6th April 2006.
THERE IS NO FEE FOR THIS COURSE!
THEME:
‘Disarming The Powers! Challenging Sacred & Cultural Violence’
Many people have difficulty with Christianity due to what seems the many violent images of God portrayed in the Bible, especially in the Old Testament. There are violent texts of scripture which have been used to authorise and support violence. What do we do with such ‘sacred texts’ ?
The process must address the issue of violence within ourselves, society, scriptures and God. There are hard questions to ask; a culture to unmask and an alternative nonviolent vision to be shaped - which might well be described as just peacemaking.
For those who take part there will also be an opportunity to meet for a day with other groups from across N. Ireland and the border counties to share experiences and support each other in developing communities of reconciliation.
Theme for residential this year is 'Just Peacemaking - Strategies for Active Non-Violent Peacemaking' and will be held in Drumalis Conference Centre, Larne, from 5th - 7th May 2006.
The course is delivered by facilitators from the Irish School of Ecumenics and is funded by the Community Foundation for N I as part of the
E U Special Programme for Peace & Reconciliation - Phase II (Cross-border Consortium).
Other centres where the course is being run include: Belfast, Coleraine, Limavady, Dungannon, Portstewart, Newry, Ballycastle, Tandragee, Castlewellan, Enniskillen, Dundalk, Raphoe, Ballybay
and now Carrickfergus.

UNITY PILGRIM VISITS
(Posted March 2006)

There will be an opportunity for parishioners to take part in friendship visits to a number of Churches in the Carrickfergus by joining some local congregations in their regular Sunday morning Services. This will take place on Sunday 26th March 2006.
Sunday morning is the time traditionally set aside for Christians to get together to worship and give thanks to God. Ironically it could also be said to be the time when Christians are most apart as we worship within the confines of our various denominations. Here is an opportunity to experience something different,
especially if you have not been to a service in another Church in your town.

The traditional date for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is 18-25th January. Those dates were proposed in 1908 by Paul Wattson to cover the days between the feast of St Peter and the feast of St Paul, and therefore have a symbolic meaning.

SUPERMARKET OPENS ON ST NICHOLAS' HIGH SCHOOL SITE
(Posted October 2005)
On Monday 24th October a new Tescos superstore officially opened on the site of the old High School, Minorca Place. The land had lay derelict since the school closed in 1989 due to a fall in student numbers.
The day was a day of mixed emotions for parishioner Patricia McKeown who along with store manager Trevor Barnett, officially opened the store. Patricia was a pupil at the High School and attended the school on the first day of its opening. So it was fitting that she was there to signal the end of one era and the beginning of another. Her father
and grandfather had both taught at the school.

PRESENTATION NIGHT FOR FR COSGROVE
(Posted October 2005)
Following on Fr Bishop Walsh's visit to the parish on Friday 17th October for the official installation of Fr Dillon as Parish Priest, at which Fr Dillon's family and friends were in attendance, it was the turn of Fr Cosgrove to visit for a final farewell and presentation, held on Friday 28th October. A large number of parishioners came along to express
their gratitude to Fr Cosgrove for his work over the past 8 years and to enjoy an evening of music refreshments and fun. Father Cosgrove's family were there as were a number of clergy from Carrickfergus with whom Fr Cosgrove had worked closely to build cross community ties. The night which began with the formalities in the school hall, continued into the wee small hours in the
adjacent community centre. Thanks for everything Fr Cosgrove!

PARISH YOUTH CLUB
(Posted August 2005)
The parish youth club for the young people of Carrickfergus and
Whitehead is now up and running with an average attendance of 50
people each night.
The club meets every other Thursday but there is a demand for a Saturday
night session as well. For the club to operate efficiently and safely we
need adult guidance and that is where YOU come in. The club will not
survive and succeed if there is not sufficient adult help. There has to be
six adults present before we can even open the hall doors and we only
have six volunteers at present!
We need adult presence for a number of tasks: it could be to organise or
supervise an activity such as table tennis, volley ball or the tuck shop, or
just to be present in the hall "just in case." Can you spare any time for the
youth of our Parish? The time and talents or skills you have to offer can
be negotiated to suit you.
Three hours a fortnight on a Thursday or Saturday night would be great
but if you can only help once a month or only now and again we would
still welcome you.
Can you offer a one off session on your hobby or pastime, which may spark an interest in our young people?
Have you access to activities or funds that we can link into?
We want to speak to you personally, so if you want to discuss what you
would like to do, without commitment, please complete the questionnaire
at the back of the church and place it into the box in the church entrance labelled "YOUTH CLUB" on or before Sunday the 21st August 2005.
Thank you.

PARISH WELCOMES Fr SEAN DILLON
(Posted August 2005)
The parish was pleased to welcomed Fr Sean Dillon as he took up his new post as Parish Priest of Carrickfergus on 17th August 2005. A native of Kircubbin, Co. Down, Fr Dillon comes to us after serving in St John's parish in Belfast. In his first sermon at Sunday mass Fr Dillon said he was looking forward to his time in Carrickfergus and emphasised that he saw his role as
one of working 'with' rather than 'for' the parish community, as together we build God's kingdom here, in this area where God has placed us.

Fr COSGROVE MOVING TO LARNE
(Posted August 2005)
It is with sadness that we say goodbye to Fr Michael Cosgrove who has taken up his new post as Parish Priest in Larne. We wish him every blessing in his new parish. We thank him for all his hard work, support and friendship over the past eight years in Carrickfergus. His time with us will be remembered as a time of rebuilding, renewal and new beginnings.
His commitment to the building of positive working relationships with other churches and clergy in the town has also been ground breaking. He leaves us with a firm foundation for the future to which we can look forward with renewed hope and confidence.
